Mahindra Thar already has such a name developed in the Indian market that it doesn’t need any further introduction. From the huge waiting period to the absolutely crazy fan following, the 2020 Mahindra Thar is nothing less than an offroader’s dream come true! What if we told you that Mahindra has something more in the house for you? Yes, we are talking about the 5-door Mahindra Thar which is speculated to enter the Indian market by 2022.
We know that Maruti will be bringing in the Jimny in the Indian market and that will be a 5-door version so this call was definitely expected from Mahindra and it is official now. We will be able to see a 5-door version of the already existing offroader in the market really soon.
5 Door Mahindra Thar | Expectations
While the current 3-door version of the Mahindra Thar remains to be the sporty version, the 5-door Mahindra Thar would be more inclined towards those who want to use it as a lifestyle vehicle. More space in the cabin and in the boot with the rugged Thar styling will make it a perfect family vehicle that will appeal to enthusiasts as well.

The current version of the Mahindra Thar has a length of 3,985mm and a wheelbase of 2,450mm. When the 5-door Mahindra Thar will come into the market, we can expect these metrics to gain at least 20% in the figures following the trend of the difference between 3-door and 5-door Jeep Wrangler. Also, the current version has a rear seat which can easily fit in 2 persons but we can expect a wider rear seat in the extended version. This is because the increased wheelbase will move the arches behind, opening room for a wider rear set. On the other hand, this will decrease the offroading capability due to the reduction of the breakover angle.
What’s Under the Hood?
Under the hood, we can expect the 5-door Mahindra Thar to have the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and the 2.0-litre Stallion petrol engine which will be coupled to the same 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox.

While Mahindra plans on the extended Thar, Maruti Suzuki is also planning to bring in the Jimny in India. It would be a tough and interesting fight. We highly await the arrival of both these vehicles in India to see which one is able to attract the maximum audience. Maruti’s brand name or Thar’s cult image? What do you think?
