Stage 1,2 & 3 of Tuning a car
Once you start getting your hands dirty while modifying your car, you’ll get to know that there are different parts for different stages of tuning. But what exactly do these stages represent and which one should you go for? Let’s find out.
Stage 1
It is the most basic type of tuning. Stage 1 tuning is suitable for cars that are to be used every day. It requires ‘bolt-on’ or single modification approach. The basic upgrades that are done on the car are suspension upgrade, lighter flywheel, alloy wheels, sports exhaust and panel air filter. These additions do not require any sort of modification to the engine or the car body.
Stage 2
This type of tuning requires an aggressive approach. There will surely be a power enhancement which will require some other involved parts to be changed in order to keep the car safe. The changes done in stage 1 will be added with a high flow injector, ported and polished head, sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades and a fast road cam.
This tuning will make the car track-ready but you can still drive it on the roads. Though, you will have to get the car serviced more readily than the normal schedule.
Stage 3
The car tuned with this stage of tuning is not suitable for use on roads. You will have to add engine balancing, a turbocharger or a supercharger, bigger pistons, bigger valves, competition cam, sports gearbox and much more in the engine. If you are planning to get Stage 3 tuning done on your car, first of all, you’ll have to forget about the fuel economy. But in return, you’ll get the maximum power output from your car. This car won’t be able to pass the emission tests but will fly past the opponents on a track any day. Being this powerful will also add to a disadvantage, you cannot drive the beast through the traffic easily.
So this was a list of 5 budget-friendly and tuning-friendly cars in India that you can choose from and how can they be tuned. But that’s not all, Stay tuned for the second part! Some more rides are on their way. Have you got any car that has been modified? Let us know in the comments section below. You can also share information regarding the same here.
FAQs
Which car is best for tuning in India?
A good choice for tuning in India is a car that has strong aftermarket support and easily available spare parts. For example, the Volkswagen Polo and Maruti Suzuki Swift are known to be “mod-friendly” because many parts are available and many enthusiasts have done upgrades. But remember: “best” depends on budget, your goals (fun drive vs serious performance) and your comfort in maintaining the car.
Is car tuning allowed in India?
In India, modifications to cars are legal provided no laws concerning safety, emissions, and registrations are broken. You may want body kits, safer suspension upgrades, and other minor changes which are acceptable; however, other alterations which are structural changes, major engine swaps, or parts that break emission and noise regulations will be illegal. When tuning, always consider your local Regional Transport Office (RTO) and insurance policy.
Which car is easy to tune?
An “easy to tune” car will have aftermarket parts and a strong post-sale modifications community, and a strong base engine and/or chassis. For easy-to-tune cars, consider the Maruti Suzuki Swift and/or the Volkswagen Polo which are mentioned in India every so often. Tuning will become more costly and challenging the rarer a car gets or if there are few available parts.
What is the most mod-friendly car?
The most mod-friendly car will have the greatest tuning capabilities and community back. For instance, old cars like the Skoda Octavia (1.8 TSI) or VW Polo GT TSI are one of the best mod-friendly options in India since most are tuned to the max. Choose a car that has been modified a lot, if you want to do mod work so you can gain information from people and the community.
Is DC modification legal?
If by “DC modification” you mean modifications done by the firm DC Design (or its custom upgrades), then yes as a service it exists and cars are modified. But each modification must obey the law: structural changes, major engine swaps, or changes affecting registration/emission/safety need approval. So the modifications themselves are not automatically legal just because done by DC Design. If you plan to do any DC Design style mods, ensure you check RTO/insurance/registration compliance.
Is stage 3 tuning legal in India?
“Stage 3 tuning” typically means serious performance modifications (turbochargers, big hardware changes, etc.). Such major modifications often fall into legal grey areas in India: they may violate emission or vehicle specs, require RTO/Arai approval, and could invalidate insurance. So while not specifically “banned” across the board, stage 3 tuning carries a heavy risk of legal/registration/insurance problems unless fully compliant.
Is chip tuning legal?
Chip tuning is more subtle and technically permitted in many cases, provided the car still meets emission and safety norms and registration is correct. Some sources say ECU remaps are not strictly illegal but may lead to warranty/insurance issues. If you choose chip-tuning, ensure that the remap does not exceed emission limits, doesn’t alter vehicle classification and that you inform your insurer.
