BMW Launches The Most Powerful M Series Yet: BMW M5

Recently, BMW launched the M5 in India, the most power-equipped M-series hybrid model yet.

BMW has introduced the seventh-generation M5 in India, priced at ₹1.99 crore (ex-showroom). This new model features a plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain, making it the most powerful M5 to date. Notably, it is priced higher than the previous generation, which was launched at ₹1.62 crore in 2021.

Engine and Performance
The new M5 combines a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric motor integrated into its eight-speed automatic transmission. This setup delivers a combined output of 727hp and 1,000Nm of torque. Power is distributed to all four wheels via BMW’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Despite an increased weight of approximately 2.5 tonnes, the M5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, extendable to 305 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package. The 18.6kWh battery offers an electric-only range of up to 69 km and supports AC charging up to 7.4kW.

Technology and Driving Modes
The seventh-generation M5 comes with several technological enhancements to improve driving dynamics and efficiency. It features adaptive suspension and rear-wheel steering as standard, which enhances its handling and stability. The plug-in hybrid system offers multiple driving modes:

  • Hybrid Mode: Balances performance and efficiency.
  • Electric Mode: Allows for electric-only driving up to 140 km/h.
  • eControl Mode: Maintains battery charge through energy recuperation.

Design and Features
The M5’s exterior features a more aggressive design compared to the standard 5-Series, featuring sculpted bumpers, flared wheel arches, and a gloss black grille with the ‘M5’ logo. It rides on 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, with a carbon fiber roof as standard. Inside, the M5 offers a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and M-specific elements like a flat-bottomed steering wheel and sports seats with an illuminated M5 logo. Additional features include four-zone automatic climate control, a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, and a wireless charging tray.

Comparison with Competitors
The new M5 is priced slightly above the recently launched Mercedes-AMG C 63, which is priced at ₹1.95 crore and features a smaller 2.0-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid engine. The M5 offers significantly more power and a greater electric-only range, positioning it competitively in the high-performance sedan segment.
