Vehicles Registered In Ladakh To Get ‘LA’ Number Plates

The Indian Government has officially updated a section in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 which specifies the designated registration held by vehicles of every state and union territories in India. To begin with, ‘LA’ will be specified on the license plate of every road-legal vehicle registered in the newly formed union territory of Ladakh.

The government had taken the decision on August 5 to nullify Article 370 of the Constitution and has now withdrawn Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and has further bifurcated the state into two Union Territories. Before its bifurcation, vehicles that were registered in this region came with a “JK” plate. Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) were officially split into two Union territories on October 31.

The ministry of road transport and highways in a notification on Wednesday stated that this newly formed law will help the system to categorise cars, scooters and other vehicles from those registered in what was previously the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

In the recent Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act of 2019, which came into effect from October 31, 2019, stated that Ladakh has now become two separate Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

However, the cars registered in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will continue to carry their original ‘JK’ designation.

FAQs

1. How many RTO in Ladakh?

Ladakh is administered with a small transport setup. Practically, you will deal with two district-level offices in Leh and Kargil (often shown as ARTOs), under the UT transport department. So in day-to-day terms, it’s basically Leh + Kargil for vehicle work.

2. How to get Ladakh plates?

To get Ladakh plates, the vehicle has to be registered in Ladakh, usually through the Leh or Kargil office, and you’ll need the standard RC documents plus a valid local address proof requirement where applicable. Once registered, you get the LA series (for example LA-02 is commonly used for Leh). Dealers can also process registration if you’re buying locally.

3. Which state has the most registered vehicles?

By total volume, Uttar Pradesh is widely reported as the state with the highest number of registered vehicles. This is based on compilations that cite VAHAN and MoRTH-linked registration data. If you want, tell me whether you mean total vehicles or only cars, the answer can change.

4. Does Ladakh have its own number plate?

Yes. Ladakh has its own registration series and the number plate starts with LA. That change came after Ladakh became a Union Territory, so vehicles registered there carry the LA code.
