Aston Martin Common Problems and Their Possible Solutions

Aston Martin, popularly showcased as The James Bond car, isn’t just another luxury car brand, but it carries on the legacy of British fine engineering, Luxury & sophistication. Although Engineered to perfection as they say in the world of automotive, “Even the finest engineering isn’t without flaws”, the British luxury car brand isn’t an exception either, with some of the most well designed car with the top of sheet performance, Aston Martin car’s like others still do have their own set of flaws.

Thus, here’s a list of Aston Martin common problems and their possible solutions.

aston martin common problems

1. Electrical System Malfunctions

Problem

A problem very old with Aston Martins since 2004 DB9  has been an issue with the electrical system of the cars, primarily with infotainment malfunctioning, central locking issues, and the GPS system.

However, the brand has reported that these issues have been resolved, and for post-2015 models of DB9 and Vantage V8, the reports of such issues have been close to none.

Solution

  1. Regular battery health checkup: Sometimes, the problems are caused by the simplest of issues, such as issues with the car electronics are mostly just an issue with the battery pack of the car; regularly keeping a check of battery health could solve these issues.
  2. Infotainment and ECU Software Update: Aston Martin often rolls out software updates for their infotainment and ECUs to resolve such issues to be resolved with ease and hassle-free.
  3. Faulty Sensor & control modules: These issues, when reported, were widely due to some issues in sensor & body control modules, especially the body control modules commonly known as BCM.
  4. Prevention Tip: If the car is not to be driven regularly, or needs to be left idle for a few days, an owner can leave the car on a Trickle charger.

2. Transmission & Gearbox Issues

Problem

Another commonly criticized issue that has been reposted about the Aston Martins is related to its well-known, “Sportshidt automated manual gearbox”, however widely regarded as very smooth and soft shifts when launched in vantage and DB9, but many later reported issues like jerky gear shifts, delayed response and even occasional failure to select the gear.

Solution

  1. Transmission Fluid: These issues often persist in cars. not because of the engineering or mechanical part issue, but mostly due to Transmission fluid, which should be replaced regularly
  2. Gearbox Software: Aston Martin reported that the issue was widely fixed with a simple gearbox software recalibration.
  3. Clutch Replacement: Since it’s a manual gearbox. Its functionality primarily depends on the clutch system of the car; thus, replacing the clutch actuator or gear selection motor is often a solution.
  4. Prevention Tip: Most of these cars aren’t meant for heavy “stop-and-go” city traffic but for smooth and calm rides.

3. Early Suspension Wear

Problem

Although Aston Martins are known for their sophisticated suspension system, this isn’t the case for Indian roads. A majority of issues by the Indian owners of these cars are just from early wear out of dampers, bushings, and ball joints.

Solution

  1. Parts Replacement: The most common and easiest solution is to get these worn-out parts replaced as soon as possible. But other than that, here are a few more solutions
  2. Polyurethane Bushing: A long-term fix for these issues could be a replacement of the regular company-fitted Bushings with polyurethane bushings, which are a longer-lasting alternative to OEM rubbers
  3. Prevention Tip:

The owner who regularly kept in check the wheel balancing and alignment reported the wear out much later than the owners who didn’t, even when the distance covered was identical.

4. Overheating and cooling system Failures

Problem

Aston Martin is focused on high performance, and their engines produce a lot of heat. Thus, radiator leaks and thermostat failures can lead to an overheating engine.

Solution

  1. Replacement of Parts: The easiest and most common solution is just to replace the Radiators and hoses regularly.
  2. Polyurethane Bushing: Many owners, especially in hotter climates, prefer to replace their water pump with a custom “Performance water pump” for better flow and maintenance of temperature maintenance.
  3. Coolant level check: Regularly checking and getting the coolant topped up to the recommended level could solve this problem to a great extent.
  4. Prevention Tip: Flushing out the cooling system every 2-3 years could solve and prevent this problem in the long term

5. Poor economy and Misfires

Problem

A well-known and very common issue, not just for Aston Martin but for most luxury cars, is poor fuel economy. which are often caused by a fouled spark plug or dirty fuel injectors, while in the case of Aston Martin, the most common issue has been an Intake issue.

Solution

  1. Fuel Injector Cleaning: A regular cleaning of the fuel injector helps to a great extent, as with a proper injector, the engine health is maintained, providing a better fuel economy.
  2. Air leaks: Ensuring and checking that there are no air leaks in the intake system of the car. which has been the main issue with the Aston Martins
  3. Prevention Tip: Owners are often recommended the use premium fuel and tune-ups to maintain a better fuel economy.

Conclusion

While Aston Martins still sit at a top the sheets for some of the best performance cars ever made, it still at heart is a car brand trying to push the limits of engineering, innovating and moving towards a brighter future, which comes with it’s challenges, thus these were some challenges the car brand faces with their high premium luxury cars, though any of these issues are a deal breaker, they surely are persistent enough to be called a challenge, the car brand needs to fix as soon as possible.
