MG Comet EV vs Tata Punch EV – Complete Comparison

The EV market is picking up at a serious pace in India, and with more affordable electric options entering the scene, the choices for city commuters are better than ever. Two of the most talked-about contenders in the budget EV space are the MG Comet EV and the Tata Punch EV. The MG Comet EV is a head-turner with its ultra-compact design, while the Tata Punch EV brings an SUV-like stance and better road presence. Nowadays, people are worried about the high price of petrol, which is why the craze for EVs is increasing. For short city travel, people are looking for compact and budget-friendly options. While the MG Comet EV is a stylish and small car, the Tata Punch EV is a solid and SUV-type looking car. Both come with their feature, but which car is best for you? Let us discuss in simple language the difference between design, range, and performance in this blog.

1. MG Comet EV vs Tata Punch EV: Design and Aesthetics

MG Comet EV

MG’s approach with the Comet EV is simple—make it compact, quirky, and extremely city-friendly. The brand has given the Comet EV a very modern & futuristic design language with square lights & LED strip front view combined with compact dimensions, it has a unique cabin too, with twin 10.25-inch screens and a joystick-style gear shifter that gives it a techie vibe.

Tata Punch EV

The Tata Punch EV has been launched with a similar bold, mini-SUV-like design to its ICE engine variant, but still carries the new EV-specific changes. However,  when compared to the Comet, the Punch comes with a Front fascia with a light bar, body cladding, and higher ground clearance. It feels more substantial on the road, and from a distance, you wouldn’t even guess it’s an electric car, due to its similar design to the non-EV variant.

Verdict

If you want something super compact and futuristic, the Comet EV delivers. But if you prefer a tougher, more “SUV-like” look with road presence, the Punch EV wins this round.

2. MG Comet EV vs Tata Punch EV: Performance and Driving Experience

MG Comet EV

Powered with a 17.3 kWh battery, the Comet EV produces around 42 bhp and 110 Nm of torque, and with its rear-wheel drive and compact dimensions, it’s a well-suited car for city traffic. But beyond 60–70 km/h, the car feels a bit out of breath, but it shines and serves the purpose it has been designed for, i.e, people driving in a regular stop-go traffic, tight parking spaces, and short-range daily commutes.

Tata Punch EV

The Punch EV is available in two battery options—25 kWh and 35 kWh. The long-range version produces 121 bhp and 190 Nm of torque, which gives it much better acceleration. 0–100 km/h comes up in ~13.5 seconds, and the performance feels confident even on open roads.

Verdict

The Comet is made for the city and the city only. But if you want to take the highway now and then—or enjoy stronger acceleration—the Punch EV will suit your driving needs more.

3. MG Comet EV vs Tata Punch EV: Range and Charging

MG Comet EV

With Comet EV, the Company claimed a range of about 230 km, but in real-world city conditions, users have claimed a range of around 180–200 km. The car comes with a 3.3 kW AC charger with a charging time of 7 hours from 0 to 100. However, with the absence of fast charging, it limits the flexibility of quick charges, in case you forget to plug in to charge overnight.

Tata Punch EV

The Punch EV’s standard battery pack gives a real-world range of 230–250 km in the city, while the long-range version can stretch to 300+ km in real-world use. It supports 7.2 kW AC charging and 50 kW DC fast charging, allowing 10–80% charge in under an hour.

Verdict

Punch EV easily beats the Comet in this department. Better range + fast charging = more peace of mind.

4. Technology & Features

MG Comet EV

A budget choice, but still the brand has managed to load the Comet with neat features like dual 10.25” screens, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and a digital instrument cluster. However, still lacks the advanced safety features and some minor comfort-oriented touches like a rear wiper or rear defogger.

Tata Punch EV

The Punch EV is loaded—ventilated front seats, a 360° camera, blind spot monitor, electronic parking brake with auto hold, OTA updates, and even Arcade.EV (Tata’s in-car gaming/entertainment). Top variants get a large 10.25” infotainment screen and Harman audio.

Verdict

Punch EV feels more “complete” and is future-ready with connected features and a more premium cabin experience.

5. MG Comet EV vs Tata Punch EV: Pricing and Variant

Car Price (Ex-showroom)
MG Comet EV ₹6.99 – ₹9.98 lakh
Tata Punch EV ₹10.99 – ₹15.49 lakh

The Comet EV is much more affordable, and you get an electric car under ₹10 lakh—a rare thing. However, the Punch EV justifies its higher price with features, space, range, and charging capabilities.

Who Should Consider Buying These?

For the Urban Minimalist: MG Comet EV

If your commute is within 30–40 km a day, and you want something different and affordable, the MG Comet EV is perfect. It’s a great second car, or a first for solo drivers who don’t care much about boot space or highway trips.

For the Practical Urban Family: Tata Punch EV

If your needs for a car include a spacious enough car for 4 adults, a better rating in safety, better range, and the flexibility to go intercity, the Punch EV is a better choice. It has the flexibility to handle more than just the daily office run.

Conclusion

Both MG Comet EV & Tata Punch EV offer unique advantages and are well-performing cars in the current market, and they cater to a wide range of buyers. If someone is looking for a budget-friendly car, for heavy stop-and-go traffic, dealing with tight parking spots, and a short daily commute distance, without having the need for a family car, they can easily choose the MG Comet EV. If someone is a daily commuter looking for more space, as well as for short intercity travel, the Tata Punch EV can be placed as the best choice.
