Polluting the environment, the vehicles on road need to have some restrictions on exhaust emissions. These emission norms differ from county to country. BS or Bharat Stage norms are the norms in India. According to the latest emission norm change, BS6 will be implemented from 1st of April this year. Let’s see how different bs6 is from euro6 (bs6 vs euro6)

BS6 | Emission norms
The recent changes in the emission norms are from BS4 to BS6 which will be implemented next month. It is termed as the huge technical jump as BS5 was skipped in between. The emission norms changed from BS4 in 2017 to BS6 in 2020 (3 years). Both automobiles as well as oil companies are affected as they have double the work to do.

European Emission Standards Stage 6
These are the 6th up-gradation of the emission norms in Europe and was implemented in September 2014. Euro6 was implemented to reduce the harmful pollutants from the vehicles’ exhaust gasses. These include the reduction of NOx (Nitrogen Oxides), SOx (Sulphur Oxides), COx (Carbon Oxides) from both diesel as well as petro engines and PM (particulate matter) from diesel engines.
Unlike in India Euro6 exhaust emission norms came in a sequence. The first euro emission norm Euro1 was implemented in 1992 for passenger cars and light trucks. The latest exhaust emission norms are Euro6d which is a slight upgrade over Euro6.

1. Is BS6 the same as Euro 6?
BS6 and Euro 6 are almost the same idea. Both are rules to make cars release less pollution. BS6 is made for Indian conditions, so it has a few changes. Euro 6 is used in Europe. You can say BS6 came from Euro 6 but not a total copy-paste. The purpose of both is cleaner air.
2. Is Euro 6 good or bad?
Euro 6 is mostly good because it helps reduce harmful smoke from vehicles, so the air becomes cleaner and people stay healthier. The only downside is that car companies have to use expensive technology so vehicles can cost more. But it’s useful since it cuts pollution & protects the environment.
3. What is the equivalent of Euro 6 in India?
In India, Euro 6 is basically known as BS6. It is the same type of rule that controls how much pollution vehicles can produce. When BS6 started, companies had to update engines and fuel quality so the air would stay cleaner. So, BS6 is considered the Indian version of Euro 6.
4. What does Euro 6 mean?
Euro 6 is a set of rules used in Europe to reduce dangerous gases like NOx and small particles from vehicles. It tells how clean the exhaust should be. Because of Euro 6, car makers add advanced systems so that the smoke coming out is cleaner. It’s mostly about saving the environment & health.
5. When did Euro 6 start in India?
India began BS6, which is nearly the same level, instead of using the designation Euro 6. BS6 went into effect on April 1st, 2020. Every new car required to operate by BS6 regulations after that. Reducing pollution and improving national air quality were the objectives.
