To put the pollution in check and control the Indian government has BSES (Bharat Stage Emission Standards). The regulations BS4 or BS6 put a certain limit on the number of harmful gasses that the exhaust of a vehicle emits.

After BS4 in April 2017 and now new BS6 norms from 1st April 2020. Stricter emissions regulations result in major changes in performance. In turn, the changes in the engine lead to shifts in the power, torque and efficiency figures.

First, let’s take a look at the norms.
BS4 | Made the difference
In April 2017 the cleaner BS4 emission standards were implemented with some subtle changes in the powertrain of the vehicle. There was no noticeable difference in the power and economy figures from the previous BS3 vehicles. The changes included an upgraded carburettor for low capacity (up to 200cc) motorcycles and the introduction of EFI system in mid-capacity motorcycles. Alongside that, there was an introduction of new catalytic converters inside the exhaust systems of the vehicle.

BS6 | The Hype
BS6 will be the turning point for the automotive industry. The new norms are bringing tremendous changes in the powertrain design in the vehicle. A lot of engines are getting discontinued especially types of Diesel engines and a couple of petrol engines. Due to these changes the BS6 engines are undergoing, performance figures and the overall economy is getting hampered.
Performance changes and solutions
- The major changes like installation of DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) in diesel engines.
- The entry of an even more efficient catalytic converter in petrol engines the performance drop is unavoidable.
- The increased backpressure and more efficient combustion is the major cause of the drop.
- The manufacturers are working hard and spending more and more hours in order to avoid the performance drops.
- One such solution is to turbocharge the petrol engine to increase the air going inside the cylinder for better combustion.
