Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for the future but just like other automakers, the future is not electric yet for India’s largest automaker. MSIL is banking on the CNG vehicles and on the upcoming hybrid technology to strive in the future market. All of us know that the new emission norms, the BS6 will be live by next month i.e. April 2020. Maruti Suzuki plans to discontinue the diesel engine lineup from April 2020.

We have seen that they have launched the Vitara Brezza in petrol version just now and plan to discontinue the diesel version of the car really soon. Further, Maruti Suzuki also plans to introduce several parallel hybrids in the Indian market developed by parent Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC).
For the next few months, Maruti Suzuki is eyeing on the CNG vehicles to gain the sale numbers. MSIL is expecting a sale of about 1 million green vehicles in India. Half the figure comes from the CNG vehicles that Maruti has made so popular in the Indian market these days. Additionally, MSIL also plans a sale of 250,000-300,000 units from 48-volt smart hybrids. These will emerge as an alternative to the diesel vehicles that MSIL is planning to discontinue.

The electrification in India will take time for now according to Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. They are planning to launch alternative technologies like the above-mentioned hybrid technology and reduce the dependence on oil and therefore cut down the pollution. MSIL plans to watch the market carefully and note the electric vehicle progress or downfall at each step. If they find it feasible, they will step in any time!
“We have CNG, we have strong and mild hyrbids, depending on the product we have to select the technology,” said Maruti Suzuki MD Kenichi Ayukawa. The automaker has already commenced the work to make CNG available throughput their range of small vehicles. CNG vehicles currently contribute 9% of the overall sale amount. Getting ready for the competition, MSIL has decided not to raise the prices of their cars much. This will surely give them an edge.
