You spend hours cleaning the coffee stains off your white shirt; none of your friends or family members wants to sit in your bouncy car. Even your dog has started to become carsick. Your car’s odometer has clocked thousands of kilometres, and the tires have started to wear out because the camber is out, a sure sign it’s time for new shocks.

Shock absorbers can also become faulty when you drive briskly on bad roads and accelerate the wearing-out process. Or maybe the shock mountings have loosened.

Shock absorbers – often known as ‘shocks’ – are hydraulic dampers that absorb the energy created by bumps in the road while driving, safely controlling the movement of the wheels and preventing the car from bouncing as it travels over uneven surfaces. Shock absorbers are one of the crucial components of a car’s suspension. It helps shield you and your passengers from the discomfort of bumps and potholes in the road while ensuring that the vehicle handles safely.

What is The Life Span Of A Shock Absorber
A good quality shock absorber can last for around five years. But the life expectancy of a shock absorber also depends upon various factors like your driving style and how many miles you have munched. The sorts of roads you use, are they urban or rural.
How To Tell If Shock Absorber Need Replacement?
- The ride turns into a bumpy one, cars will bounce off on the slightly uneven road, and passengers will feel like being on a merry-go-round that keeps going up and down.
- There will be a perceivable drop in the cushioning of the car. You will feel the vibrations of driving on uneven roads.
- You will hear audible thud-thud sounds while going through potholes or poorly designed road bumps.
- You will also hear a klonk-like sound on usual humps.
FAQs
1. How often should car shock absorbers be replaced?
Shock absorbers usually need replacement after long-term use, not suddenly. Most cars start showing wear between regular service cycles. The change is gradual. You feel it as extra bounce and less control over time.
2. How much does it cost to replace a shock absorber?
The cost depends on the car and the type of shock absorber used. For most cars, it ranges from a few thousand rupees per unit. Labour and alignment may be additional. Prices vary based on quality and brand.
3. Is it worth replacing shock absorbers?
Yes, if the ride has started feeling unstable or uncomfortable. Replacing them restores balance and makes the car easier to drive, it’s a practical fix, not just for show off.
4. How many kilometres do shocks last?
On average, shock absorbers last between 40,000 to 80,000 kilometres. Indian road conditions can reduce this lifespan. Potholes and rough patches accelerate wear even with careful driving.
5. Will new shocks improve ride quality?
Yes, the difference is noticeable. The car feels more planted over bumps and less bouncy on uneven roads. Steering response improves. Long drives feel calmer and more controlled.

I am facing the same problem of suspension with my Honda W-RV 2018 model. I can feel even small changes on the road. Even a small bump is getting inside my car. And my car is bouncing a lot on the back. Even a slight upside on the road makes people bounce on the back of my car. I have installed rogers but the impact remains same.
I dnt know if it is manufacturing problem or my suspension problem.
Please tell me what to do.
