Skoda has finally unveiled its much-awaited compact SUV; the Skoda Kushaq. A vehicle that will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks etc. Over the months, the Skoda Kushaq had us all waiting. Now that the company has officially brought the Kushaq to the limelight, here are 10 interesting things to know about it.
1) It’s Vocal for Local
Skoda has claimed to have developed the Kushaq as a made-in-India and made for India compact SUV. Therefore the Kushaq is a 90% localized product. This will help the Czech automaker to keep the pricing highly competitive and affordable. The Kushaq is part of the Volkswagen Group’s India 2.0 project, which aims to establish Skoda as an affordable premium car brand in India.
2) It has a unique name
The name of Skoda’s mid-size SUV comes from the Sanskrit word “Kushak” which means a king or emperor. However, the company chose to replace the ‘K’ with a ‘Q’. This was done so that the name of the compact SUV shall start with a K; a trend Skoda has been following while naming its SUVs.
3) Underpins the MQB A0 IN Platform
Skoda Kushaq is underpinned by the MQB A0 IN platform that’s specially developed for the Indian market. It is a cheaper and more cost-effective derivative of Volkswagen’s AG’s modular MQB architecture. The MQB A0 In platform will underpin a wide range of segment vehicles, and the first amongst them is the Kushaq.

4) Petrol only powertrain (TSI)
Ahead of the BS6 implementation, Volkswagen Group India announced that it would be ditching the diesel engine in India. Keeping this in mind, the Kushaq will be sold as a petrol-only vehicle. There will be two petrol engine options — a 1.0-litre and a 1.5-litre TSI motor, both produced locally.
5) Multiple Transmission Choices
Skoda confirmed that the 1.0-litre TSI motor on-board the Kushaq will be offered with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter gearbox. On the other hand, the 1.5-litre TSI engine will be offered with a 7-speed DSG and a 6-speed manual.
6) Good Looking Exteriors
The Kushaq will be based on the Vision IN concept and will feature Skoda’s latest design language. It will come studded with elements like the large butterfly grille, trapezoidal LED fog lamps, front skid plate etc. The Kushaq will also have flared wheel arches, 17-inch alloy wheels, sleek LED headlamps and LED DRLs. The rear profile of the vehicle comes with a chiselled boot lid and tailgate, along with L-shaped tail lights and much more.
7) Premium interiors
The Skoda Kushaq is loaded to the brim with premium comfort and convenience features. Some of these include ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, wireless charger and electronic sunroof. What’s more is 10-inch infotainment, automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, cruise control and much more.
8) Ample Safety
Safety-wise too, the Kushaq is quite loaded. The compact SUV offers ESP, dual airbags, ISOFIX, rear parking sensors, ABS with EBD and top-tether anchor points as standard. Higher trims come with up to 6 airbags, multi-collision braking, hill-hold control and TPMS.
9) Highly Practical
With a wheelbase of 2,651 mm, the Kushaq is one of the longest compact SUV in the segment. And with 188mm of ground clearance, the Kushaq can easily tackle the Indian Roads. The boot space on offer is 385-litres which can be enhanced with rear seat folding.
10) Vibrant Color Options
Colour-wise, the Kushaq is offered in vibrant colours that include Candy White, Reflex Silver and Carbon Steel. There are also two exclusive colours for India, which includes the Honey Orange and the Tornado Red.
