Tata, among the most prominent Indian carmaker, brings a couple of new vehicles almost every year. Well, kudos to the company because they do this along with regularly refreshing their vehicles with something new. This year, after the launch of the Safari, Tata to pitch the micro SUVs has come up with a Punch (quite literally).
Though we have discussed it earlier, to remind you again, Tata Punch belongs to the micro SUV segment in India. Okay, for you to understand better, we already have a vehicle in this segment, Mahindra KUV100. Yup! to expand its feet Tata is coming with a vehicle in a not so famous or rebound segment. Hope this works for them. But before giving any verdict, let’s see what else comes near to Tata Punch.
Taking the competition, Tata has another vehicle that we think might be in the same price range, Tata Tiago NRG. Choosing one would be a little confusing for many, so let’s clear them out, shall we?
Tata Punch VS Tata Tiago NRG
Okay, wait, the first thing might pop into your head; Tiago pitched against Punch; how come? Allow us to clear it, where Tiago is a hatchback that doesn’t compete with Punch, but its NRG variant can be pitched against it. For one,
- They almost have the exact dimensions.
- Both cars share the same powertrain and drivetrain.
- Tata Punch and Tiago NRG both have beefed-up aesthetics.
- But do they share the same set of features?
- Most importantly, both the cars may end up clashing when it comes to price.
So, without any further we do, let’s break each of the aspects in detail.
Which one has better cabin space? (Dimensions)
Dimensions Comparison |
||
Tata Punch | Tata Tiago NRG | |
Length (mm) | 3,827 | 3,802 |
Width (mm) | 1,742 | 1677 |
Height (mm) | 1,615 | 1,537 |
Wheelbase (mm) | 2,445 | 2,400 |
Ground Clearance (mm) | 187 | 181 |
Boot Space (Litres) | 366 | 242 |
What is represented in numbers also translates visually on the outside as well as space on the inside. Tata Punch is a size larger in all aspects, be it length, width, or height. Moving on, the difference is even more visible when we talk about ground clearance. Tata Punch sits about 7mm higher than the Tiago NRG wrapped with plastic to justify the micro SUV tag. For reference, Punch is just 3mm lower than the top-selling compact SUV, Hyundai Creta.

Is there any difference in the Engine and Transmission?
Sharing the same basic platform, i.e ALFA architecture, they both share the same powertrain and drivetrain. Speaking of which, Tata Punch and Tata Tiago NRG come powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Setting fire to front wheels are two options, a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission).
Tata’s 1.2-litre engine specs |
|
Engine | 1.2-litre Revotron Naturally Aspirated Petrol |
Number of cylinders | 3 |
Power | 84.8bhp@6,000rpm |
Torque | 113Nm@3,300rpm |
Transmission | 5-Speed MT/AMT |
The engine can generate a peak power of 84.4bhp that comes higher in the rev range (6,000rpm). Also, the torque is adequate, which stands at 113Nm which comes in at a considerably lower rpm (3,300rpm).
Which one looks better?
When it comes to aesthetics, these are always subjective. But still, considering the looks, Tata Punch is more inclined towards the SUV DNA, which means that with that bit of more ground clearance, you’ll be able to tackle a little bit of off-roading. On the contrary, Tata Tiago NRG merely has cosmetic updates over the standard Tiago.
