Remembering The Chevrolet Sail U-VA And Sail Sedan In India

It has been 3 years since Chevrolet has left India. General Motors exit in 2017 left many Chevrolet lovers in despair. Some might even go to any extent to bring the company back! Okay, I have exaggerated on this for sure. But still, the American carmaker offered some good cars in their regime in our country. One such was the Chevrolet Sail. Let’s take a look at the time when the company tried to capture the sedan segment.

In 2012, Chevrolet showcased Sail U-VA hatchback at the Auto Expo 2012. It was later launched nationwide on 2nd November 2012. This car became a huge success in the Indian market. It crossed a total sales of 1 million units by July 2014.

Then, in 2014, Chevrolet introduced a sedan based on the same platform. The name for the sedan, Sail! You add a boot and cut the name, isn’t that a great marketing strategy?

What was there under the hood?

There were two engines offered with this car. Both the engines were developed in the GM’s Technical Centre in turn in collaboration with support from engineers from Pune and Banglaore plants. The company designed these engines specifically for the Indian market. The small diesel engine was a small turbocharged diesel engine that was refined and known to have reliability and good performance.

What about the dimensions of the Chevrolet Sail?

The Sail was optimum on space inside the cabin, thanks to its decent wheelbase. The dual-cockpit design of the Corvette is what inspired the interiors of the Sail.

The sail UVA offered dual-tone (coffee beige) interior colour option. The premium fabric upholstery was meant to make sure that the occupants feel the luxury at a lower price, which we will discuss later. A factory-fitted Audio system was also offered in the higher variants of Chevrolet Sail. It was compatible with Bluetooth.

Chevrolet Sail was ‘A Safe Bet’, the company said. It had a good set of Active and Passive Safety features. To add to the safety of this car, Chevrolet carefully placed the fuel tank at the centre of the car which was fortified by the cross structures. Chevrolet Sail was built to last.

Aggressive Pricing, you said!

Chevrolet sought to capture the sedan market in India. So the sedan was priced between ₹5.76 lakhs to 8.44 lakhs. But still, it was not able to capture the market as there were some cars like Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire and Honda Amaze which people chose over the Chevrolet Sail. The company tried to lure in customers by giving a facelift to the car, which failed too. And with the exit in 2017, Sail was gone!

    • We would not recommend a second-hand Chevrolet if you want a daily driver. Chevrolet cars (now that they’ve gone) do struggle from poor after-sales service and spares parts are really scant.
