Recently, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways signaled that three-point seat belts for all passengers in cars will be mandated. The MoRTH has been taking several measures for increasing safety in vehicles, this being one of them. While most cars do get a three-point belt for 4 passengers, the fifth one is mostly a two-point seat belt. Today let’s discuss more on three-point vs two-point seat belts.
-
What’s the difference?
So a two-point belt, also known as the lap belt goes over the lap of the passenger and wraps itself around the hip. In case of a jerk, the passenger will remain seated, but there might be sudden and severe movement in his/her upper body. A three-point seat belt goes over the lap, and also through the shoulder and chest of a passenger. This helps in keeping him/her completely in place in case of emergencies.

Why aren’t all belts three-pointed?
Well, it does cost a bit more to produce and install a three-point seat belt, as compared to a two-point. While this cost-cutting may seem negligible for one car, it can turn into millions when mass production is considered.

Three-point vs Two-Point Seat Belt- which is better?
Needless to say, a three-point seat belt is much safer when compared to a two-point belt. The compulsion of all 5/7 belts being three-pointed is a good one, it will increase the safety quotient for the middle passenger by a lot.

So this was a quick Three-point vs Two-Point seat belt comparison. Let us know in the comments, which safety features you think should be mandated!

FAQs
1. What is the primary advantage of a 3-point seat belt over a 2-point seat belt?
The biggest advantage of a 3-point seat belt is that it supports the body in three areas: the shoulders, chest & waist. This distributes the shock evenly during an accident rather than placing pressure solely on the waist. A 2-point belt only holds the waist, thus increasing the risk of injury.
2. Do you need a 3-point seat belt?
Yes, a 3-point seat belt is important, as it holds the whole upper body & reduces the risk of serious injury in an accident. This is considered to be the safest option for daily driving. You are either young or old, in the front or the back seat it is always better & safer to wear a 3-point belt.
3. Why don’t aeroplanes use 3-point seat belts?
Aeroplanes do not have 3-point seat belts because space in planes is limited and 3-point belts are not practical on all seats. The seat design & emergency needs of the aircraft are different. During turbulence or takeoff-landing, the body only needs to be kept stable in the seat, for which a 2-point belt is sufficient.
4. Did Volvo invent the 3-point seatbelt?
Yes, Volvo invented the 3-point seat belt. In 1959, their engineer, Nils Bohlin, created the design that has become the standard safety belt worldwide. Volvo kept the patent for this invention open so that every company could use it.
