Vintage vehicle lovers have news to rejoice. The vintage vehicles are going to get a special number plate with VA included in the registration number. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a notification stating that the vintage vehicles will get a special registration number soon. For e.g., a vintage car in Delhi will have DL VA XX 1234 as the registration number.

The notification issued by the MoRTH states that such vehicles will be classified as a vintage model. These eligible vehicles will be the ones which are more than 50 years old from the date of registration.
These will also include old imported vehicles. The issued notification states that a Vintage Motor Vehicle State Committee (VMVSC) will be set up in each state for evaluating and taking proper decision for the said vehicles.

The Ministry has stated in the draft that the vehicle owner of the said vehicle will have to furnish documents such as valid insurance policy, bill of entry in case of an imported vehicle, and the old registration certificate. The vintage vehicle registration is going to cost an owner a fee amount of Rs 20,000. All the documents will be verified and approved by the VMVSC.
After the approval of the VMVSC, the Vintage Motor Vehicles State Registering Authority (VMVSRA) will issue a registration number to these classic machines. The validity of the registration will be for 10 years after which it can be renewed.
The draft also states important points regarding the use of the registered vintage vehicles. Such a vehicle will not be allowed to be driven on the public roads for regular use. These vintage vehicles will only be allowed to be displayed or demonstrated in any exhibition, rally, show or a museum. The only allowed use on public roads is when a vintage vehicle would ply for refuelling and regular maintenance.

The sale and purchase of the vintage beauties will be allowed. The buyer/seller of such vehicles will have to notify the State Transport Authority within a stipulated time of 90 days of the purchase/ sell.
