Tata Motors & Its Line-Up Of Engines Explained | Power-Trails

No matter how good-looking or feature-rich a vehicle is. Its ultimate success or failure depends on the performance it delivers. This means that the heart of a vehicle is what actually makes or breaks its legacy. This is the reason why all leading OEMs have a specialized R&D wing, to constantly innovate engine technologies to make them smarter, better and more efficient. And when it comes to leading OEMs in India, Tata Motors is a name that strikes a chord. So here’s Tata Motors’ Line-Up of Engines Explained!

Those who follow Tata Motors know about the innovative Revotron and Revotorq set of engines that Tata Motors offer onboard their entire inventory. While both the Revotron (Petrol) and Revotorq (Diesel) engine families were first unveiled in 2014, for Tata’s passenger vehicles, both engine families have undergone significant development and improvements since then.

The Tiago hatchback; the car that changed the way people looked at Tata Motors, underwent 50,000 kilometres of a high-stress endurance test for both engines, where the vehicle was run at a speed of about 120 kmph for an 18 day non-stop high-speed rive test. The result was an advanced, fuel-efficient and rigorously tested engine legacy.

The Revotron Engine

  • One thing that makes the Revotron so special is the fact that it is India’s very first indigenously developed 1.2 litres turbocharged, fuel injection multipoint engine. Both the turbocharged and NA version of the Revotron is designed to deliver maximum fuel economy while offerings a peppy drive experience.
  • Both the 3 and 4 cylinder versions of the Revotron is offered with three drive modes: Eco, Sports and City which lets the user change the engine’s overall performance output as per the driver’s needs. While the City mode maximizes the efficiency, the Sports maximize performance.
  • All three driving modes are supplemented by an advanced engine management system with a stiffened crankcase that leads to minimal NVH levels and a smart ECU that offers precise control. Optimized and built-in collaboration with AVL Australia, Bosch, INA and Honeywell, the 1.2 litre Revotron is critically acclaimed and drives the likes of Tiago, Altroz, Tigor, Punch and Nexon. Also Read: 10 Car Manufacturers And Their Most Powerful Petrol EnginesRelated: Naturally Aspirated Power Vs Turbo Ability | What India Wants?

The Revotorq Engine

  • Much like the Revotron, Tata Motors’ 1.5-litre 4-cylinder Revotorq Diesel engine family has been developed to withstand extreme performance, while delivering an intuitive driving experience. The Revotorq family of engines has been designed to maximize efficiency while offering a well-refined, power-packed and stable road performance.
  • The Revotorq engine has been globally benchmarked, on parameters such as refinement, economy and performance. The Revotorq also offers multiple drive modes supplemented by a state of the art ECU. • The latest offering by Tata Motors, the 2.0-litre KRYOTEC engine is engineered to offer exceptional refinement, supreme performance, and superb efficiency. This 4-cylinder Diesel engine is equipped with an intelligent management system and exhaust after-treatment systems that return an extremely low carbon footprint.
  • Much like the Revotron and Revotorq families, the Kryotec family also offers multiple drive modes along with terrain response modes as well. The advanced Electronically Controlled Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) onboard the Kryotec offers excellent pickup and power to tackle all kinds of terrains.
  • The 2.0 litre Kryotec also comes with Low Friction Valve Train Architecture and an Advanced EGR to deliver exceptional fuel economy and to meet stringent emission requirements. Inspired by the Cryogenic Rocket Engine, the Kryotec 2.0 is available for the sizable Tata Harrier as well the Safari SUV.

FAQs

1. Which engine is used in Tata Motors?

Most Tata cars run on their in-house Revotron petrol and Revotorq diesel engines, they’re tuned for efficiency and everyday performance. The larger SUVs like Harrier and Safari rely on Fiat-sourced engines which Tata retunes to handle Indian traffic and road conditions better.

2. Is Tata using Fiat engines?

Yes, Tata still fits Fiat engines in some of its SUVs. The Harrier and Safari both use the 2.0 Kryotec diesel, which is Fiat’s Multijet II at its core, only Tata gives it their own tuning so it feels smoother to drive and more responsive at low speeds.

3. Which is the best car engine in India?

Maruti’s 1.2 K-Series petrol is considered the most reliable and fuel-efficient, it’s simple and lasts long without much fuss. Hyundai’s 1.5 CRDi diesel is popular for being refined and quiet, while Mahindra’s 2.0 mStallion turbo-petrol wins when it comes to pure performance and punch.

4. Who made the Tata Nexon engine?

The Nexon’s 1.2 Revotron petrol and 1.5 Revotorq diesel were developed by Tata itself in India, built from scratch for local conditions. They’re designed to give a good balance between city mileage and highway performance, which is why the Nexon feels so versatile.
