Ford attempted to purchase Ferrari. In 1963, to raise Ford’s fame or dominance in the racing industry, negotiations between Henry Ford and Enzo Ferrari regarding the Ferrari deal progressed significantly. Birth of a Legend: The Making of the GT40

After a failed deal between Ford and Ferrari, Henry Ford decided to build his own racing car from scratch, which could compete with Ferrari on racing tracks. Ford’s desire to become a player in performance motorsports remained strong, with Ferrari’s or without Ferrari. A month later, Ford started forming a the High Performance and Special Models Operation Unit with As a project engineers, they chose Eric Broadley, whose Lola GT was considered groundbreaking, and John Wyer, who had won Le Mans with Carroll Shelby driving for Aston Martin as the race manager with the mission to design and build “A racing GT car that will have the potential to compete successfully in major road races such as Sebring and Le Mans., and this is how the Ford GT40 car comes into existence. The car’s name comes from its low profile.

Technical Innovations in the GT40, Shelby, and Miles Entry in the Frame

During the building of the Ford GT40 car, Henry Ford faced many technical problems. And the involvement of Shelby and Miles was like icing on the cake for Ford. Shelby and Miles helped in handling and improving stability. This was achieved by augmenting the aerodynamics through flow testing. The basic idea was that the better a car passes through the air, the easier it is for the engine as the load reduces. Thus, less power is required. This was done by taping yarn to the extrinsic parts of the car. If the yarn lay flat, the design was good. If not, it was inferred that there were requirements for changes in the design of the car.  This helped Shelby and Miles to modify the suspensions and body to finesse movement on the track.

Phil Remington came to rescue the Ford GT40 from the braking issues. Instead of making brakes that would allow the GT40 to last for the entire race, he devised a quick-change brake system that would allow the mechanics to replace the worn-out pads and rotors with new ones during the driver change. The dynamometer was used to rectify the reliability issues. Testing an engine on a Dyno is standard practice nowadays; at that time, it was radical. A dynamometer is a device that simultaneously measures the torque and rotational speed (RPM) of an engine so that its instantaneous power may be calculated and usually displayed by the dynamometer itself as kW or bhp. The team ran the engine on the dyno for 24 to 48 hours, recreating what the engine will face in the real race.

After that, Ford continued to dominate upcoming races. Even with their American drivers, the car highlighted great engineering and the depth of Ford’s dedication. These successes secured Ford’s place as a major player in the automobile industry. With these victories, Ford becomes a powerful player in the racing industry.

  • Ferrari’s Struggle to Keep Up: Ferrari was the queen at Le Mans and now started getting issues such as internal conflicts, limited budget issues, and quick technological advancements. With that, they found it difficult to match Ford’s speed, reliability, and resources. The company began shifting focus more toward Formula 1, where they had a stronger base.
